A Touch Of Pink
At Centers for Mobility Prosthetics, our team consists of a certified mastectomy fitter, Jessica Longoria. She has been fitting and caring for women who have gone through a mastectomy for nearly 15 years. Fittings are done in a private and stylish boutique known as “A Touch of Pink”. In the privacy of the boutique, you are fitted with your breast prosthesis, mastectomy bra, post-surgical camisole and/or compressive arm sleeves. Jessica works closely with each patient to find the correct size and style of the product. Her goal is to help restore the patient’s body image and self-confidence.
Touch of Pink partners with the following manufacturers: Amoena, Airway, American Breast Care, Classique, Medi, Nearly Me, Silma, Trulife and more.
FAQ
ARE THERE PRODUCTS AVAILABLE TO HELP AFTER MY MASTECTOMY?
A mastectomy camisole is designed to be worn immediately after your mastectomy or as prescribed by your physician. The camisole has pockets to hold any surgical drain tubes and fiber fill breast forms to restore shape. After you are healed you may be fit with mastectomy bras and breast form(s).
WHAT IS A BREAST PROSTHESIS?
It is an artificial breast made from silicone, foam, or fiberfill material; they are either off-the-shelf or custom made. They are designed to be worn inside the pocket of mastectomy bras. Forms come in three different shapes: triangular, teardrop or heart shape. They help restore the woman’s natural appearance of a breast.
WHEN WILL I BE FIT WITH A BREAST PROSTHESIS AND MASTECTOMY BRA?
After your drains are removed and your chest wall is completely healed, your physician may order mastectomy bras and a breast prosthesis.
HOW DO I CARE FOR MY SILICONE BREAST PROSTHESIS?
With gentle care, the silicone breast prosthesis may last for many years. Be careful not to puncture it. It should be washed daily with warm water, soap and rinsed well. Store your prosthesis in the cradle of the box to help maintain its shape. Do not use powder, lotions, or perfume. Avoid heat.
WHAT IS A MASTECTOMY BRA?
A mastectomy bra is very similar to regular bras found in the department store. The big difference is a mastectomy bra has a pocket in each cup designed to hold a breast prosthesis in place.
WHY DO I NEED A WEIGHTED PROSTHESIS AFTER MY MASTECTOMY?
With a mastectomy, there is loss of breast tissue so the body may lose balance and compensate with a slight curving on the spine and/or “shoulder drop”. These conditions may lead to chronic lower back and neck pain. For these reasons choosing a breast form with some weight may help in restoring the patient’s weight loss after surgery.
ARE MY MASTECTOMY PRODUCTS COVERED BY MY INSURANCE?
Yes. The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act helps protect women with breast cancer. Most insurance plans are required to reimburse for mastectomy bras, breast prosthesis, and other products and services. At Centers for Mobility, we are ready to help you determine your coverage with your policy.
